What is the difference between editing and proofreading?

Proofreading is a surface-level review that corrects spelling, grammar, punctuation, and typographical errors. It is the final step before submission and assumes the content, structure, and argument are already sound.

Editing goes deeper. Academic editing addresses the clarity and flow of individual sentences, the logical structure of paragraphs, the appropriateness of academic register and tone, the coherence of the overall argument, and the accuracy of citations. Most student work benefits from editing rather than proofreading alone.
