Systematic Literature Review
SLRs use the IMRD structure: Introduction, Methodology (search strategy, PRISMA, inclusion criteria), Results (extracted evidence), and Discussion & Conclusion. The Results chapter is typically the largest at around 40% of the total word count.
PhD / Doctoral
70,000–100,000
UK PhD theses typically range from 70,000 to 100,000 words. Sciences and engineering PhDs are often shorter (40,000–80,000). Most institutions exclude references and appendices.
What counts toward your word limit?
In most UK universities, the following count: all body text, in-text citations, and headings. The following are typically excluded: the abstract, reference list, appendices, tables and figures, and footnotes. Always verify with your module handbook as institutional rules vary.
The 10% tolerance rule
Many UK universities permit submissions within 10% of the stated word count without penalty. A 10,000-word dissertation may be accepted anywhere from 9,000 to 11,000 words. This is not universal however - some institutions penalise any overrun. Check your programme regulations before relying on it.

Are references and appendices included in the word count?
In most UK universities, references, bibliographies, and appendices are excluded from the word count. The abstract is sometimes excluded too. Check your programme handbook for your institution's specific rules, as they vary.
