What the survey measures

The annual survey tracks six areas of academic challenge that consistently appear in UK student experience research.

Academic writing skills

Essay structure, argument development, and the ability to write at the required academic level across all degree levels and subjects.

Referencing and citation

Correct and consistent use of the required referencing style. A significant source of mark deductions across UK institutions.

Assessment expectations

How clearly students understand what markers are looking for before submitting. Many complete assignments without confidence in the marking criteria.

Workload and deadlines

Balancing multiple assignments, planning research effectively, and submitting on time. Particularly acute at dissertation stage.

Source access and evaluation

Finding peer-reviewed sources, assessing their credibility, and integrating them effectively into academic work.

University support awareness

Whether students are aware of and able to access writing support, study skills services, and learning development resources at their institution.
