What is a research proposal?
A research proposal is a formal document that outlines the plan for a research project. At Masters and doctoral level, it is required before a dissertation or thesis can be approved by a supervisory panel, ethics board, or funding committee. Its purpose is to demonstrate that the proposed research is original, necessary, and achievable within the available time and resources. A strong research proposal is not simply a description of what you want to do, but a carefully argued case for why it should be done and how.

How to develop a strong research topic for your dissertation
Choosing the right research topic is the most important decision in the proposal process. A good topic must be: specific enough to be studied within your time constraints; broad enough to find existing literature to engage with; original in some meaningful way (new context, new population, new method, or new angle); and personally sustainable over the months of your study period.
Start by identifying the area of your field that interests you most. Read recent journal articles in that area and note what the authors identify as limitations of their own work or directions for future research. These are your gaps. A research proposal that begins from a genuine gap identified in the literature is far stronger than one that begins from a topic chosen because it sounds impressive.
