UK dissertation word count quick guide
Standard ranges across UK degree levels, verified from institutional guidelines. Always check your own programme handbook.
Undergraduate
8,000–15,000
Most common range is 8,000–12,000 words. Arts and humanities dissertations trend higher; sciences and engineering trend lower due to data tables and figures.
Master’s (Taught)
12,000–20,000
UK taught MA and MSc dissertations most commonly fall between 15,000 and 20,000 words. MBA programmes typically require 10,000–15,000 words.
Systematic Literature Review
SLRs use the IMRD structure: Introduction, Methodology (search strategy, PRISMA, inclusion criteria), Results (extracted evidence), and Discussion & Conclusion. The Results chapter is typically the largest at around 40% of the total word count.
PhD / Doctoral
70,000–100,000
UK PhD theses typically range from 70,000 to 100,000 words. Sciences and engineering PhDs are often shorter (40,000–80,000). Most institutions exclude references and appendices.
What counts toward your word limit?
In most UK universities, the following count: all body text, in-text citations, and headings. The following are typically excluded: the abstract, reference list, appendices, tables and figures, and footnotes. Always verify with your module handbook as institutional rules vary.
The 10% tolerance rule
Many UK universities permit submissions within 10% of the stated word count without penalty. A 10,000-word dissertation may be accepted anywhere from 9,000 to 11,000 words. This is not universal however - some institutions penalise any overrun. Check your programme regulations before relying on it.
Common questions
Are references and appendices included in the word count?
In most UK universities, references, bibliographies, and appendices are excluded from the word count. The abstract is sometimes excluded too. Check your programme handbook for your institution's specific rules, as they vary.
Is a 10% word count allowance standard?
Many UK universities allow a 10% tolerance either side of the stated word count before penalties apply. However, this is not universal. Some institutions penalise any submission over the limit. Always verify your institution's policy before submitting.
Why are science dissertations shorter than humanities dissertations?
In sciences and engineering, data tables, figures, graphs, and equations carry much of the analytical weight and typically do not count toward word totals. Humanities dissertations rely almost entirely on discursive prose, so the word counts are correspondingly higher.
What if my institution requires a different word count?
This calculator provides standard UK benchmarks based on published academic guidance. Your institution's programme handbook or module specification is the authoritative source and always takes precedence over any general guideline.
How do I distribute words across chapters?
The calculator generates a suggested chapter breakdown based on your degree level and subject area. As a general guide, the literature review and findings or analysis chapters typically account for over half the total word count at every level.
