Why topic choice matters
Choosing a strong dissertation topic is one of the most important decisions you will make during your degree. A well-chosen topic is one that genuinely interests you, is feasible within the available time and resources, has a clear research gap in the existing literature, and produces a focused and answerable research question.
A poor topic choice, too broad, too narrow, already exhaustively researched, or practically impossible to investigate, creates problems that persist throughout the project. Time invested in topic selection pays dividends at every subsequent stage. If you need support at the writing stage, GradeQuill's dissertation editing service is available for students at all levels.
Start with your interests
The most sustainable motivation for a dissertation, a project that may take six to twelve months, is genuine intellectual interest. Begin by identifying the areas of your subject that have engaged you most during your degree. Which modules did you find most stimulating? Which essays raised questions you wanted to explore further? Which topics prompted you to read beyond the required reading list?
Interest alone is insufficient, but it is the best starting point. A dissertation on a topic you find genuinely compelling is both more enjoyable to write and more likely to demonstrate the depth of engagement that markers reward.
Identify a gap in the literature
A research question should address something that existing literature has not fully answered. This does not mean discovering entirely new knowledge, most undergraduate and Masters dissertations contribute to knowledge by applying existing frameworks to new contexts, testing established findings in a different setting, or exploring an underexamined aspect of a known phenomenon.
To identify gaps, begin with a preliminary literature search. Read review articles and meta-analyses in your area, they often explicitly identify limitations and directions for future research. Sections headed "limitations" or "further research" in journal articles are particularly useful starting points. For guidance on literature searching, read our article on how to write a literature review.
Test feasibility
An interesting research question is only useful if it can be investigated within the constraints of your project. Consider: Can you gain access to the data or participants you need? Is the scope achievable within your word count? Do you have the methodological skills required? Is the timeline realistic given your other commitments?
Common feasibility problems include: requiring ethical approval for participant research that takes longer than anticipated; needing access to organisations or individuals who are difficult to recruit; or designing a study that requires statistical analysis skills beyond your current level. Address these questions before committing to a topic.
Narrow your focus
Most students begin with a topic that is far too broad. "The impact of social media on mental health" is a topic, not a research question. A focused research question might be: "To what extent does Instagram use predict symptoms of depression in female undergraduate students at UK universities?"
Narrowing involves specifying the population, context, time period, and aspect of the topic you will examine. A narrower question is easier to answer thoroughly within your word count and produces more focused, convincing findings than a broad study that touches on everything superficially.
Discuss with your supervisor
Before finalising your topic, discuss it with your dissertation supervisor. Supervisors bring subject expertise and experience of what works at dissertation level in your programme. They can identify problems with feasibility, suggest refinements to your research question, point you toward relevant literature, and advise on appropriate methodology.
Come to the initial supervisor meeting with two or three potential topic ideas rather than one, so that the conversation can explore options. Present a brief rationale for each, why you are interested, what gap you think it addresses, and how you might investigate it. For comprehensive dissertation writing support, GradeQuill's dissertation editing service is available at all stages of the project.
